SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Minnehaha County Auditor Bob Litz wants to put up absentee ballot collection boxes at 15 locations around the county to try to prevent a flood of ballots in the final days of the November election.
“We’ve heard a lot of noise about the postal system and the late delivery of ballots lately, so this idea that I’ve got dovetails in with that.”
Litz tells the County Commission that hopefully, the collection boxes will encourage more people to get their ballots in early to avoid the logjams his office had in the June election.
“Over 40 percent of those ballots came the last week, and I’m hoping that this will alleviate some of that build up right before the election.”
Litz says the collection boxes could be placed at library branches around the county.
He says he’s spoken with South Dakota Secretary of State, Steve Barnett and Barnett likes the idea.
Because of COVID-19 concerns thousands more voters than ever before have been using absentee or mail-in voting to avoid going to polling places on election day.
