WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO.com) — Senator John Thune believes it would be “problematic” for President Donald Trump to deliver his Republican nomination speech from the White House.
The President has been thinking about it as an alternative location since the coronavirus is causing challenges at GOP convention venues in North Carolina and Florida.
Senator Thune questions whether it would be legal to deliver such a purely political speech on federal property.
Reporters have asked Trump what he thinks about Thune’s concerns.
“John Thune did? Right? The Republican John Thune? Well, it is legal. There is no Hatch Act because it does not pertain to the president.”
The Hatch Act of 1939, broadly speaking, prohibits employees in the executive branch of the federal government from engaging in some forms of political activity.
