SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls Schools Superintendent Brian Maher shared his theme for the new school year, in a speech to the Education Foundation on Thursday.
“That is: Take care of yourself, take care of others, and take care of this place.”
Maher used the example of the rocket that put Apollo in orbit to describe how initiatives can sometimes move in the Sioux Falls School District. Rockets start slow off the launch pad but keep gaining speed.
“We have one area critically important to our society, critically important to our school district where we need to look at that and we are very much in the launch phase of moving very slow and that’s addressing issues of mental health,” just not for students, Maher said, but for teachers and staff as well.
The mental health challenges refer back to Maher’s theme for the new school year: taking care of yourself, and others.
“If we can move even one-and-a-half feet per second on that issue this next year we will have a highly successful year in the Sioux Falls School District.”
The 2019-2020 school year begins August 22.
