SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Road salt to treat Sioux Falls roads this coming snow season is costing a whole lot more.
City Public Works Director Mark Cotter briefs City Council during budget hearings.
“We’re seeing almost a $15 per ton increase, which is substantial,” Cotter says the city used to be able to buy road salt for about $64 a ton, now it’s more like $84.
The exact reasons for the substantial increase aren’t really clear. It could have something to do with a mine closed somewhere, or maybe transportation. Cotter isn’t completely sure.
But if the trend continues, Cotter says the city might think about investing in technology to determine if the roads could still be treated efficiently with less road salt.
