BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The start of school at Mickelson Middle School in Brookings will likely be delayed by one week — to August 30.
Construction work continues on a $25 million addition and renovation project at the school and it remains behind schedule.
Superintendent Klint Willert says there will be a special School Board meeting at 5:00 p.m. today to change the start date. As recently as this week’s regular School Board meeting, the plan was still to start on the 23rd. Classes will start at the other schools on the 23rd.
The project contract had a completion date of August 9th. When it became clear that would be an issue, the district received assurances that the classrooms would be ready.
Willert says the school may seek damages from the general contractor, Gray Construction.
Willert says safety and security will remain the top priority for all students and staff.
