BROOKINGS, SD, (KELO.com)– Construction for the Mickelson Middle School in Brookings has delayed class start time to September 4.
Other schools will start at their original times on August 23, while registration for Mikelson Middle School will be September 3 with classes beginning the next day.
The school is under a $25 million addition and renovation project, but because of bad weather, the project is not complete.
In late July, the contractor said that the first set of classrooms would be finished by August 16. Teachers at the school will now go to their unfinished classrooms on August 30 to prepare for the school year.
School Board Member Roger DeGroot addressed Eric Anderson with A-T-S-and-R, the firm overseeing the project.
“What kind of guarantee do we have that our students can walk into that building in a safe environment, safe air— conditioned air— on September 3? I don’t know if you can give that.” DeGroot said.
Anderson apologized to the school board saying their company “allowed the ball to be dropped” when trusting the contractor.
The original completion date was supposed to be August 9.
The school may seek damages against the contractor and the architect.
