SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Governor Kristi Noem says that South Dakota’s first state veterans cemetery near Sioux Falls will be a tribute to patriots.
“This project is incredibly special. It’s just not about building another cemetery. It’s about showing gratitude and demonstrating to the next generation that sacrifice does not go unnoticed.”
The groundbreaking is set for September 9. The land, north of the Interstate 90/229 interchange, was donated by the City of Sioux Falls.
Noem thanks veterans for all their hard work.
“This project would not have been possible if not for the hundreds of veterans and veterans group who have poured their time into raising funds and support for the cemetery.”
Currently, the only cemetery in the state officially designated for veterans is the National Cemetery in Sturgis, but veterans in eastern South Dakota and in the region have been asking for a closer final resting place.
Federal funds will pay for the cemetery on nearly 13 acres. The construction will include 610 pre-placed crypts, 999 cremains gravesites, 660 columbarium niches, and 50 memorial wall markers.
“This cemetery will immortalize the sacrifices that have been made for our freedoms,” says Noem.
