BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Two motorcycle riders participating in the Disabled American Veterans Poker Run near Brookings crashed.
63-year-old Patrick Patenode was traveling east on SD 324 near 479th Ave. when he lost control of his 2012 Harley Davison motorcycle.
The motorcycle was laid on its side and Patenode fell off the back in the eastbound lane of traffic.
51-year-old Thomas Owen was also traveling eastbound in his 2008 Harley Division and swervedto miss Patenode who was laying in the eastbound lane of traffic.
When Thomas swerved to miss Patrick he tipped his motorcycle over.
Both were taken to the hospital.

Motor Cycle Injury Accident Reported: Saturday, 08/31/19 @ 1243 Location: Hwy 324 near 479th Ave. Driver of unit 1: Patrick Allen Patenode Age: 63 Clark, SD Vehicle 1: 2012 Harley Davison Motorcycle. Damage: Total loss Driver of unit 2: Thomas Michael Owen Age: 51 Spearfish, SD Vehicle 2: 2008 Harley Davison Motorcycle. Damage: $3,000.00 On the above date and time the Aurora Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, Elkton Ambulance, South Dakota Hwy Patrol, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle motorcycle accident at the above location. It was found that 63 year old Patrick Allen Patenode was traveling east on SD 324 near 479th Ave. when he lost control of his 2012 Harley Davison motorcycle, while transitioning from completed asphalt to asphalt with fresh oil. The motorcycle was laid on its side and the driver fell from the motorcycle in the eastbound lane of traffic. 51 year old Thomas Michael Owen was also traveling eastbound in his 2008 Harley Division and swerved to miss the driver of unit 1 Patrick Allen Patenode who was laying in the eastbound lane of travel after tipping over his motorcycle. When Thomas swerved to miss Patrick he tipped his motorcycle over. Patrick Allen Patenode was transported to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room by the Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries and later airlifted to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls with unknown injuries. Thomas Michael Owen was transported to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room by the Elkton Ambulance with unknown injuries. Both riders were participating the Disabled American Veterans Poker Run. Neither rider was wearing a helmet. The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
