SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Here are some stories, advisories, and tidbits from Sioux Falls’ overnight storm.
- NO, THOSE WEREN’T LOOTERS
Mayor Paul TenHaken says reports of “looting” at Advance Auto Parts were erroneous.
It was just the staff and boss going into it and assessing their devastated building.
- YES, SOME OF THE SIRENS DID NOT GO OFF
Tenhaken says that yes, some of the sirens in Sioux Falls did not go off last night during the storm.
The ones in the south part of town did fire.
He says there was a “breach of protocol” and the City is investigating what happened.
- YES, THERE WILL BE FREE DROP OFF LOCATIONS FOR YOUR TREES AND BRUSH
Public Works Director Mark Cotter says there will be drop off locations at Chambers and Cliff Avenue and 12th and Lyons Avenue. There is no charge. The sites will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and weekends. Non-tree debris should go to the landfill. Cotter says the landfill will accept debris for free until the end of the month.
- THE CLEANUP IS POSTPONED FOR THE CLEANUP
Cotter also said Project Nice and the cleanup of the Hilltop and Leaders neighborhoods is on hold pending cleanup from the storm.
- SIOUX FALLS FIRE RESCUE WAS BUSY
Fire Chief Brad Goodroad says there were 350 calls for service during the storm, 37 structures collapsed or had integrity issues. SFFR set up a southwest area command of 14 units and 58 firefighters.

There is a website for the storm and recovery.
The City has set up siouxfalls.org/storm.
It contains storm response updates and information, such as the most heavily impacted areas and shelter information.
- A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE IN THE DARK
Eric Pauli with Xcel Energy said at one point, 25,000 customers were without power in Sioux Falls. That was down to 8,500 by 5 a.m.
