SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Record-breaking water levels in eastern South Dakota are still high, but they are now on the downward trend.
Water levels are going down in the Big Sioux River levee system in Sioux Falls, according to the city’s Andy Berg.
There are still some roads closed in the area.
“Those we expect to open, hopefully, fairly soon, with the trends showing for those flows coming down,” says Berg, as long as the weather forecasts hold for the coming days.
The City of Sioux Falls is nearly finished with the debris cleanup from the recent storms, that it’s responsible for.
“We are about 92 to 95 percent that we’ve been down every right-of-way in the city,” updates City Public Works Director Mark Cotter at Monday’s storm briefing. Cotter continues to urge citizens to clean up their own properties and get the debris to the free dropoff sites. If they need help, then call the 2-1-1 Helpline Center.
The response has been tremendous, but Police Spokesman Sam Clemens says they still need more volunteers to help storm victims.
“There’s been 708 volunteers that have come through the volunteer reception center, but, like I said, we still have more people that need requests fulfilled.”
In a strong indication of how things are falling into place and life is returning to normal, Monday’s briefing was the last. From now on, any updates the city wants to get out will come through social media and press releases.
