Mayor Paul TenHaken tweeted, “This is just one example of what a resilient city looks like less than a week after three F2 tornadoes come through. What a community! #OneSiouxFalls“
On KELO Radio’s The Greg Belfrage Show this morning, TenHaken said he was pleased with the community’s response to the disaster.
“The community has united in a way that I’ve ever seen Sioux Falls unite around anything, that’s including the flooding that happened this spring,” TenHaken said. “If the City had launched an effort right away and told citizens the City is going to take care of this, people would have sat on their porches and waited for us.”
TenHaken also said because the City has a reserve fund and is in good financial condition, that also helps in the cleanup and dealing with replacing damaged public infrastructure.
“We’re going to have to tap into that (reserve) to take care of some of the damage,” he said.
TenHaken says there’s still “some big stuff left” to take care of.
“Some residents have big, huge trees that are down in the boulevard,” he said. “We got them off their house, they still have a lot of clean up work yet to do on the yard.”
The Mayor said cleanup was accomplished quickly because of public and private entities like Team Rubicon, the Helpline Center, contractors, City employees–and citizens helping other people.
