SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Mayor Paul TenHaken’s $545.3 million budget was approved by the Sioux Falls City Council Tuesday night.
Included in the budget was a six-figured line item for a “chief culture officer” aimed at boosting employee morale.
During a meeting that lasted more than three hours, councilors voted 8-0 to approve the 2020 budget. Though the spending plan focuses heavily on roads, the new chief culture officer position that will work out of the mayor’s office received the most attention.
Not in favor of adding the position were Councilors Pat Starr, Curt Soehl, Theresa Stehly and Greg Neitzert.
Next year’s budget calls for more than $200 million for the Public Works Department, much of which will be dedicated to street maintenance, repairs and expansion.
