SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Police are investigating scammers who said they were with the Social Security Administration and bilked a 46-year-old Sioux Falls woman out of $37,000.
Sioux Falls Police say the fraudsters called the woman and first demanded payment of nearly $10,000 in gift cards.
The next day, they demanded more, including more gift cards and around $25,000 in cash.
The woman texted the gift card numbers and FedExed the money to the crooks.
Another victim lost $500. They are a 32-year-old Sioux Falls resident.
In that case, the grifters said they were with the Sioux Falls Police and the resident had an outstanding warrant.
Police remind you that governmental agencies will not call you up and demand money, and, particularly, gift cards. They also say that while elders are often the victims of these scams, they see young people and professional also ripped off.
Police encourage you to call them if you get a suspicious call from someone purporting to be from the government and demanding money or other consideration.
