SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — People concerned about vaping in Sioux Falls schools met up for a town hall Monday night.
Travis Sieber, a counselor at Washington High, said he regularly talks to kids who are dependant on vaping.
“We’ve crossed that addictive line right here, and that concerns me,” Sieber said.
Washington High School principal Dan Conrad said vaping’s rise isn’t confined to a particular demographic.
“We have 1,900 kids at Washington; it could be any one of the 1,900,” Conrad said. “From your sports star to your student who is the highest academic achiever.”
“To me, vaping has the look of cool,” Sieber said. “Much like back in the fifties; cigarettes rolled up and a white t-shirt was the look of cool back then,”
When asked about how the district was educating students about vaping, district health services supervisor Molly Satter said they were looking into upgrading Sioux Falls’ health curriculum.
“That gets discussed about every eight years I believe, and vaping wasn’t around at that time,” Satter said.
Other districts in the area have installed vaping sensors in schools, but Sioux Falls is looking at other options.
