SIOUX CITY, I.A. (KELO.com) — The City Council in Sioux City approved the first reading of an ordinance amending the ban on pit bulls.
This is the first reading on the matter, to change the current city code it will have to pass two more times.
The current city ordinance was originally put in place in 2008 after a high number of dogs in the city were declared vicious or bite risks.
The current ordinance describes a pit bull as a pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Bull terrier or any dog that has more than 50-percent pit bull in it.
Bans on the breed are being lifted across the country.
The council will meet again next Monday night.
