SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Washington High School Teacher, Allie Ter Horst, is named one of the greatest teachers in the United States.
Ter Horst wins the Oscar of teaching, the annual Milken Award and $25,000.
But it’s not really the money…
“Someone saying you changed their life, that is a currency that will be more worthwhile than any money you will get.”
Allie says she doesn’t get surprised easily, but she sure was when her win was announced at a packed school assembly at Washington High. At first, she didn’t have any thought in her head.
“It was complete mush.”
She jokes that if she had known she was the winner she would have paid more attention to her outfit and makeup.
Ter Horst is the only teacher in South Dakota to win the Milken in 2019, and one of only 40 nationwide.
Ter Horst’s specialty is Social Studies, but she helped created the District’s Teacher Pathway program. The program encourages students to think about a career in teaching.,
