SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — One person has died and another person was injured in a rollover car crash that required extrication on Interstate 229 just north of the 26th Street exit Tuesday night, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
The crash was reported around 9:15 p.m. at the Big Sioux River bridge along the Interstate. A portion of I-229 was closed down for almost three hours as authorities cleared the scene. I-229 was reopened at 1 am Wednesday.
Several crashes were reported on Interstate 229 and 29 around Sioux Falls following the initial crash because of slippery roads.
Sioux Falls was included in a winter weather advisory Tuesday night because rain caused a light glaze of ice across the city, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. South Dakota counties affected by the winter weather advisory included: Lincoln, Brookings, Lake, Moody, and Minnehaha Counties.
The advisory lasts through 6 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the NWS. The ice will cause slippery road conditions that can impact commutes, the NWS said.
Multiple crashes were reported at I-229 and Rice Street throughout the night with at least one being an injury crash.
Meanwhile, a crash in downtown Sioux Falls closed the 10th Street bridge over the Big Sioux River.
