PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — House Bill 1083 – a bill to rename the state’s postsecondary technical institutes as technical colleges passed the House floor after a lengthy debate Tuesday in Pierre.
Members of the House spent the better part of an hour debating the implications of renaming the state’s tech schools as colleges. HB1083 will now cross over to the Senate for consideration.
During the floor debate, Rep. Scyller Borglum of Rapid City testified that the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City was looking at a rebranding effort that would include a name change. She told members of the House that the name change would occur, ‘this spring.’
SDSM&T is considered one of the top engineering schools in the nation and is often compared with the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
