SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The sealed lawsuit percolated in the bowels of federal district court for almost two years before a judge unsealed it in June of 2018.
Two Sanford Health doctors sued their hospital, Sanford Health, and one of their colleagues, Dr. Wilson Asfora, saying the trio billed Medicaid for care it did not provide and for covering up Wilson’s medical errors.
Asfora was also accused of illegally profiting from medical devices he invented–and installed in some of his patients. The federal government called them “kickbacks.”

Then in February, the U.S. Justice Department, which had intervened in the lawsuit, settled with Sanford Health for $20 million dollars. Sanford also had to hire an outside auditor to monitor its billing practices under the terms of the settlement.
