SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A new drive to attract thousands of more mentors has kicked-off in the Sioux Falls area.
The new initiative is called ‘Sioux 52’. The goal is to get 5,200 new mentors, volunteering one hour a week for 52 weeks a year.
Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken and others are featured in a special video, lauding the importance of mentoring and what it can mean for a community.
“Mentored youth are 55 percent more likely to enroll in college and 46 percent less likely to start using drugs,” says TenHaken in the video.
Mentors for young people is just one facet of the new initiative. They’re looking for mentors for adults, for people just out of prison, for example, or for those starting a new business.
The Sioux 52 video features local folks who are already mentors, talking about what it’s meant for them and those they help.
