PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — What might happen on the final day of the 95th Legislative session in Pierre is anyone’s guess.
Governor Kristi Noem told reporters Monday that state officials are, “walking through some of the options that we have for veto day and talking with legislative leaders on ways that we can facilitate it.”
Lawmakers were scheduled to return to Pierre next Monday to consider gubernatorial vetoes; two so far with another 80 other bills still waiting formal action by the Governor.
Community spread was confirmed in Hughes County on Monday bringing up questions on whether the 105-member state legislature should gather as a large group for the final day.
District 30 Representative Tim Goodwin of Rapid City called upon the Governor to veto all legislative bills that deal with state expenditures.
In an opinion piece published in the Rapid City Journal, Goodwin suggests the legislature then decide which pieces of legislation to override with an eye on the new fiscal reality created by COVID-19.
State revenue estimates are falling through the floor as the state and nation grapple with COVID-19 and its effects.
