A Springfield, South Dakota man is arrested Monday afternoon after leading local law enforcement on a brief high-speed chase through western parts of Pierre.
Pierre Police Captain Bryan Walz says the officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation when that vehicle failed to stop for the officer. The driver, identified by police as Ramiro Gonzalez fled from officers at high-speed at one point down Capital Avenue then toward the Missouri River.
The pursuit part of the incident ended when Gonzalez struck a light pole in the 100 block of East Missouri Avenue. Gonzalez continued to attempt to evade officers on foot.
Meanwhile a passenger in the vehicle, Amanda Runs Above, also from Springfield, stayed in the vehicle and was taken into custody. Gonzales was eventually located about a block away in the 200 block of Island View Drive near the Missouri River where he was taken into custody.
Walz says several charges are pending against both Gonzales and Runs Above. The case remains under investigation.
Assisting Pierre police during the pursuit were units from the South Dakota Highway Patrol and Hughes County Sheriff.
