SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A bill allowing South Dakota to shorten the school year this year is heading to the governor’s desk.
Senate Bill 188 lets the state Secretary of Education waive the required hours needed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Some legislators supported amending the bill to specify it applied to the 2019-20 school year, but the amendment failed after other lawmakers were concerned sending the bill to a conference committee would lead to its failure.
The bill sunsets on July 1, 2021.
