SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Scams are popping up taking advantage of the economic uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jessie Schmidt, director of the Better Business Bureau of South Dakota, said scammers are contacting people on social media pretending to offer stimulus checks from the IRS.
“The government, and especially the IRS, will never, ever, ever get in touch with you that way,” Schmidt said on Friday’s edition of It’s Your Business with Bill Zortman.
Other scammers are telling people they need to pay a fee to get their stimulus check sooner. That’s a lie, Schmidt said.
“You never have to pay money to get money. There’s going to be no way to jump the line, to get your money faster than the next guy,” Schmidt said.
Most stimulus checks haven’t been mailed yet. Schmidt said people should be wary of any correspondence they get from the government that seems unusual.
