South Dakota’s women’s basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a come-from-behind 80-76 win over Northeastern in Boston.
The Coyotes trailed by 10 points with three minutes remaining, but outscored the Huskies 18-4 the rest of the way.
Senior Ciara Duffy, the Summit League preseason Player of the Year, led five Coyotes in double figures with 22 points, including two free throws to provide the final edge with two seconds left. Duffy was 7-for-12 from the field (2-for-3 beyond the arc) and 6-for-7 on free throws.
Monica Arens scored 16 for USD, Madison McKeever added 13, Chloe Lamb had 11, and Hannah Sjerven chipped in 10.
USD shot 52 percent from the field while Northeastern was 51 percent on field goals. The Yotes hit 6 of their 17 three-point attempts, while the Huskies were 10-for-22.
A major difference came at the charity stripe, where the Yotes were 20-for-26, while the Huskies were 6-of-11.
USD next heads to Honolulu, Hawaii to play three games in the Rainbow Classic, starting Friday against the University of Pacific.
