SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Some elderly or disabled Sioux Falls homeowners are in line for a property tax refund this year after the city council approved a pair of ordinances authorizing the tax break.
The plan will allow qualifying homeowners to get up to $500 back from their 2021 property tax bill. It will continue in future years, though the council will need to sign off on renewing funding for the rebates.
To get the refund, the resident must have applied with the county for a freeze on assessment of single-family dwellings by April 1 of the preceding year. Under state law, the assessment freeze only applies to seniors over 65 and those defined as disabled under the Social Security Act. It also comes with restrictions on income and property value. It only applies to those who own a free-standing home, a twin home, or a condo.
Councilors Curt Soehl and Pat Starr co-sponsored the ordinance. Soehl said the plan was more than a year in the making.
