SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — With spring nearly here, road construction is also upon us.
With that, the City of Sioux Falls will resume construction on the 26th Street and Interstate 229 interchange.
Until May, the City says traffic patterns in the area won’t be disrupted but will only have one lane of traffic. In May, construction moves to the south side of 26th Street, which will only have traffic on one side of the bridge over the Big Sioux River in both directions.
The City says the project should be finished in a year.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Construction season is kicking off early this year with work resuming this week on a major project: the 26th Street and I-229 interchange. The majority of the project is anticipated to be completed late this year.
Construction will begin soon on the bridge deck over the Big Sioux River. Traffic patterns for vehicles and pedestrians are not anticipated to change until May 2020, and 26th Street will remain open with one lane of traffic in each direction.
Construction on the west side of the I-229 bridge will resume in March. Vehicular traffic changes are anticipated in early May, when traffic will be switched to move on the south side of 26th Street. Demolition of the current north portion of the 26th Street bridge will then begin.
This project is distinctive for the City of Sioux Falls because of its size, and it involves the modification of an interchange and the construction of a bridge over the Big Sioux River and BNSF Railway. The railway overpass will significantly improve commute times for east side drivers. It will improve the intersection of 26th Street and Southeastern Avenue and expand East 26th Street to six lanes. The goal is to have all lanes of traffic open by November 2020.
