PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — South Dakota’s unemployment rate skyrocketed to 10.2 percent in April, driven up by the economic fallout from COVID-19.
Governor Kristi Noem says we’ve never seen such numbers.
“It’s historic in the very worst way. I think it could be record unemployment numbers for the state of South Dakota that we haven’t seen since the Great Depression.”
The April rate is triple the rate from the month before.
There are at least 14,300 South Dakotans without a job, leading to record levels of claims for unemployment benefits.
The national unemployment rate in April was 14.7 percent.
