ARLINGTON, S.D. (KELO.com) A large fire early yesterday morning at the Sunset Campground in Lake Poinsett caused considerable damage to vehicles and campers.
The fire was discovered shortly after 2:00 a.m. behind the Dollar General Store in Lake Poinsett.
Vic Erlacher is the Campground Manager at Lake Poinsett Estates. He initially thought the entire campground was going to be lost.
Erlacher said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Erlacher, who is a Hamlin County weather spotter, said many of the area volunteer fire departments who responded this morning had just finished with severe weather spotting and had gone home before they got the fire call last night.
Fire Departments from Badger, Lake Norden, Lake Preston, Hayti, and Arlington all responded. Erlacher says those are the ones he could remember.
There were no reports of any injuries as a result of the fire and damage estimates are not available.
