WASHINGTON, D.C. (KELO.com) — Face masks won’t be required for the fireworks show with President Trump at Mount Rushmore, but Senator Mike Rounds will be wearing one.
“Being back in South Dakota with a large group, I think it makes sense to wear a mask and I’m going to set that example.”
Free masks will be distributed Friday night, July 3, but they will not be mandatory. About 7,500 are expected.
Senator Rounds says wearing a mask is just part of “South Dakota common sense.”
Rounds touched on multiple topics during his latest telephone news conference with South Dakota media, including the new defense spending bill.
The Senator says the bill won’t see final votes for months, plenty of time to work out differences over the re-naming of military bases. Rounds favors local decisions on bases named for Confederate generals.
“I like the idea of doing a review of names and so forth based upon how we did it in South Dakota. I think there was a lot of common sense in having a committee get together and make recommendations on what should be changed.”
The Commission researched old place names in South Dakota that may have been insensitive for one reason or the other.
President Donald Trump has threatened to veto the Pentagon spending legislation because of problems he has with the language on military bases.
