PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — During a special meeting on July, 22, The South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) spoke about the new requirements and changes in light of COVID-19.
One of the biggest concerns facing the SDHSAA was attendance. The board decided that a one size fits all approach was not a feasible solution. ” Schools should develop some sort of tier system,” Executive Director Dan Swartos said. “So that they have some conditions or parameters they can reference so that they can take the emotion out of it when they’re looking to go from open attendance to no fans,” Swartos added when referencing a worst-case scenario.
Also for high schools that decide to participate in fall sports, the board strongly recommended mask-wearing and assigned seating on buses for athletes to and from games. The reason being contact tracing in case of an outbreak will be easier to track and mitigate, the board determined.
