SIOUX FALLS, S.D (KELO.com) — The reigning champion was dethroned in the state championship game of South Dakota’s largest football class.
O’Gorman High School the Class 11AAA state championship Friday night, defeating 2018 champ Brandon Valley 21-16 from Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings.
A one-yard touchdown run by Tate Wishard gave the Knights the lead for good in the third quarter. Brandon Valley had a fourth-down opportunity in O’Gorman’s red zone late in the game, but a would-be touchdown pass was wiped off due to a penalty.
The title is O’Gorman’s ninth in its history, the most of any team in South Dakota’s top class. It’s the first championship at O’Gorman for fourth-year head coach Jayson Poppinga.
