PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — The South Dakota Department of Health continues to classify influenza activity in the state as “widespread.”
As of January 22, there were 652 confirmed cases. Area counties reporting the flu were Brookings, Clay, Davison, Hanson, Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, Moody, Turner, Union, and Yankton Counties.
There were 14 new hospitalizations, including in Minnehaha and Union Counties.
Minnehaha County also reported one death from the flu. There have been six deaths from the flu so far this season.

Influenza activity was at “WIDESPREAD” level in South Dakota during the past week.
- 652 new confirmed* cases of influenza (598 Influenza A; 0 AH1; 51 AH3; 3 B) [Aurora, Beadle, Bennett, Bon Homme, Brookings, Brown, Brule, Butte, Charles Mix, Clark, Clay, Codington, Corson, Custer, Davison, Day, Deuel, Douglas, Edmunds, Fall River, Faulk, Grant, Haakon, Hamlin, Hand, Hanson, Hughes, Hutchinson, Jackson, Jerauld, Kingsbury, Lake, Lawrence, Lincoln, Lyman, McCook, McPherson, Meade, Minnehaha, Moody, Oglala Lakota, Pennington, Perkins, Sanborn, Spink, Stanley, Todd, Tripp, Turner, Union, & Yankton Counties] were reported last week. Total of 6,549 confirmed cases so far this season (6,507A & 42B).
- 13.20% positive rapid antigen tests reported statewide (215 positives (187A/28B) [Aurora, Beadle, Bennett, Brown, Brookings, Buffalo, Brule, Butte, Charles Mix, Codington, Clay, Custer, Dewey, Haakon, Hughes, Hyde, Jerauld, Kingsbury, Lawrence, Lyman, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, Sanborn, Spink, Sully, Todd, & Union Counties] out of 1,629 individuals tested last week). Total 15,416 tests performed so far this season.
- 14 new influenza-associated hospitalizations (Codington, Hamlin, Minnehaha, Oglala Lakota, & Pennington Counties) were reported last week. Total of 155 hospitalizations so far this season.
- One new influenza-associated death was reported last week (Minnehaha County). Total of 6 deaths so far this season.
