Yankton’s Matthew Mors became the all-time leading career scorer in South Dakota Class AA boys basketball on Friday night, scoring on a third quarter dribble drive to surpass Aberdeen Central’s Eric Kline (1988-91).
The 6’7 junior guard/forward scored 12 points — about half his season average — in his No. 1-ranked Bucks’ 54-53 upset loss at Watertown.
Mors currently has 2,026 points, but is still almost 1,500 points shy of the all-class career scoring record set by Louie Krogman of White River from 2003-08.
It seems like an unreachable mark, but SDPB’s Nate Wek did some numbers crunching:
Yankton has a maximum of eight games remaining this season – four regular season contests, the SoDak 16 playoff round, and then three games at the state tournament. If they have the same amount of games next season, then that’s 33 games remaining in Mors’ high school career.
Based on the point gap between Mors and Krogman, and the games remaining for Mors, Mors would have to average 45.3 points per game to catch Krogman’s all-time record – yeah, it’s not happening.
Mors has played on the varsity team since seventh grade and has been a starter since eighth grade.
As a freshman, the University of Wisconsin commit drained a 16-foot shot with 18 seconds in the chanpionship game left to seal Yankton’s first state title in 40 years.
