The University of Sioux Falls women’s basketball team failed to make it to Championship Tuesday in the Northern Sun conference tournament, but the Cougars are almost definitely assured to live another day in this 2019-20 season.
St. Cloud State — one of just four teams to beat USF in the regular season — dominated the Coo 76-59 in Monday’s semifinals at the tourney.
But as the number three seed in the NCAA Div. II Central Region, the Cougars will await word on their likely placement in the region next Sunday night when the NCAA announces its field for the Div. II national tournament.
The top eight teams from each region make the tourney, with the top seed hosting the three-round event on its campus. The winner from each region moves on to the Elite Eight in Birmingham, AL. Metrics help determine a committee’s voting of the teams into each region.
Senior Kaely Hummel scored 25 points in the loss to SCSU to move into third place all-time in USF scoring with 1,733 points. The All-NSIC first team member passed USF Athletics Hall of Famer Patti Ibis, who totaled 1,731 from 1986-90.
With five more three-pointers, Hummel now has 273 career threes, which is the most in school history.
