SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — $100 is going a long way for one Sioux Falls organization.
Twice a year members of 100+ Women Who Care Sioux Falls Area meet up in person. Attendees put names of nonprofits they support in a hat, and three are randomly selected. From there, a representative from each nonprofit gives a short presentation and members vote. Each member of the organization pledges to write a $100 check to the organization that wins the vote.
The group has raised $179,000 for local nonprofits since 2014.
“It’s been an absolutely phenomenal way of helping our community,” said Gita Hendricks, one of the group’s organizers.
Hendricks said she, like many people, receives plenty or donation requests from nonprofits through the mail. Hearing directly from a local representative makes her feel confident in her gift.
“It’s an excellent way of knowing exactly where your money is going,” she said.
The Sioux Falls chapter is part of a national effort; the 100 Who Care Alliance has 650 operational chapters, according to its website.
Hendricks said the group’s next meeting had to be pushed back because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the group hopes to start an initiative for a nonprofit fighting the effects of the virus, like Feeding South Dakota.
“We have a wonderful City of Sioux Falls with tremendous people that live here,” Hendricks said, “and fantastic women that love to show how strong we are and help each other out.”
