Chief Jon Thum and Capt. Jon Lohr made the announcement Friday morning at the daily news briefing.
New recruits will receive an initial $500 bonus, then an additional $1,500 once they pass their probationary period.
Certified recruits will receive a $1,000 bonus and then $4,000 after completing their probationary period.
Lohr says the job market in nearly all fields is competitive, and offering bonuses to law enforcement candidates is standard practice.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: The Sioux Falls Police Department believes in investing in hiring high-quality applicants as both recruits and certified officers. A hiring incentive targeted at both types of candidates reinforces the department’s investment in new-recruit candidates and enables the department to be more competitive in recruiting certified officers from across the nation.
This hiring incentive is designed to attract new-recruit and certified officer applicants. A hiring incentive will be paid to individuals who are hired for the position of Police Officer based on the following credentials in the year 2022:
New-Recruit: $500 at first paycheck and $1,000 after successfully passing the probationary period.
CORE (Certified Officer Reciprocity Eligible): $1,000 at first paycheck and $4,000 after successfully passing the probationary period.
This incentive has been budgeted for the year 2022 only at this time. Based on the management needs of the organization, the City of Sioux Falls may elect to end the Hiring Incentive before the end of 2022. The continuation of a Hiring Incentive will be reviewed annually by the Chief of Police, Finance and Human Resources.
