SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls Police Chief Matt Burns says he’s reviewing use-of-force and other department policies to make sure they’re on track.
“I feel really good about where we are at as a department, but as any professional organization, you have to realize that there are always areas that you can improve.”
Burns is talking to Kelo.com News about possible police reforms in the wake of the George Floyd killing in Minneapolis.
The Chief is all for body cams for more officers if the money is there. The department only has about 30 right now.
“We like the system and we would certainly be supportive of expanding that if everything lines up and the budget can support it.”
There is a growing national call for a ban or restrictions on chockholds, but Burns says his officers are not trained to use chokeholds or strangleholds, but they are trained in how to get out of them to protect themselves.
The department will not tolerate bad apples, according to Burns.
“We don’t tolerate any misconduct, and frankly,we have very, very few instances of it. But we are on watch for it and if anything should come to our attention through normal performance review, or a complaint, you can rest assured it will be taken care of quickly and professionally.”
