SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — KELO.com News’ fourth most impactful state and regional story for 2021 as selected by the KELO.com News staff is recreational and medical marijuana.
The year started with a lawsuit by two South Dakota law enforcement officials challenging the voters’ passage of recreational marijuana in November 2020.
Gov. Kristi Noem had to issue an executive order that she authorized the lawsuit.
The plaintiff in the lawsuit said the pro-marijuana group that put the measure on the ballot didn’t do it right.
The South Dakota Supreme Court agreed just before Thanksgiving, voiding the vote.
Meanwhile, the state worked on rules to implement the voter-passed medical marijuana measure, as did cities and counties.
As yet, there are no city or county dispensaries operating yet.
