Hundreds of people in South Dakota are without a home and even more go hungry every day. Every November, we dedicate more time to raising awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness. This week, we are remembering our homeless neighbors who have died with Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
A news conference to learn more about these issues in our community will be held at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the BDHH. A guest will be available to share their story with news media.
The Bishop Dudley Hospitality House will also host a remembrance walk Monday, Nov. 15 at 12:40 p.m. Participants will walk from the BDHH to the memorial for the homeless in our community near 6th Street and the Big Sioux River behind the LSS Center for New Americans building.
The Bishop Dudley provides open doors and open arms for our community’s most vulnerable. The BDHH has served about 1,400 individuals so far in 2021, with an average of 123 people each night. As winter approaches, we expect to serve even more during our overnight services. In 2020, the BDHH served 1,549 individuals, 44 families and 78 children.
