SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Governor Kristi Noem criticized South Carolina congressman James Clyburn over comments he made regarding the disbursement of federal aid funds for rental assistance to South Dakota citizens.
Clyburn said in a letter dated August 30th that 16,000 South Dakotans are facing evictions while hundreds of millions of dollars in rental assistance is going unused.
In her own letter, Noem said that the programs aren’t for just anyone needing assistance, but specifically for people affected by COVID.
She also made the claim that South Dakotans enjoy jobs over government hand-outs.
South Dakota has received over $350 million in federal COVID-19 aid for housing assistance, with the money first arriving in March of 2020.
The South Dakota Department of Housing has paid out $16 million so far, less than five percent of total funds received.
