SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) – The Sioux Falls School Board unanimously the district’s Continue to Learn plan which sets out guidelines and policies for the handling of issues related to COVID-19. During the meeting, four people encouraged the board to not mandate mask wearing for students. Some shared their stories of the students not wanting to attend school last year due to the requirement of masks. Parents also shared that their students felt pressured or treated differently by teachers and staff if they could not wear a mask.
The Continue to Learn plan does not require mask-wearing and only encourages the use of masks for those not vaccinated for COVID-19. Parents will not have to give permission for their students to not wear a mask, a change from last year’s policy. The district also will not require proof of vaccination from students or staff.
Other parts of the plan include the return of field trips and the lifting of restrictions on visitors attending extra-curricular activities.
The Department of Health will provide COVID-19 test kits that students would be able to use at home to speed the results and minimize absences.
The full plan is available on the Sioux Falls School District’s website.
