PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) – The Lifespan Respite Care Reauthorization Act was approved by lawmakers earlier this year, the Act will increase funding for the Lifespan Respite Care Program to $10 million every year through the 2024 fiscal year.
$11 million in Lifespan Respite Care State Program Enchancement Grants will go to 10 states over five years and South Dakota is on the list.
Governor Noem’s Senior Communication Advisor, Jordan Overturf says, “the Long-Term Services and Support divison within the Department of Human Services has been allotted $250,000 in the most recent round of funding.”
Overturf says the money will be used for, “ongoing support of the Lifespan Respite Care Provider Database and Website, additionally this funding will be used for training, education, and support for caregivers.”
The state of South Dakota is anticipating having these funds by early August.

Overturf says, ” There are criteria for this funding. However, if not appropriate for funding under this grant, callers may be referred to one of several alternative programs for support of respite care through the Department of Human Services. Other programs offering respite care include Medicaid Waiver programs administered through the divisions of Long-Term Services and Support, Development Disabilities, and Rehabilitation Services, as well as the Caregiver program through Long-Term Services and Support.”
