SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls’ incoming police chief wants residents to be good neighbors with their use of fireworks over the Fourth of July holiday.
Under city ordinances, you cannot shoot off fireworks in the city that fly or go bang. But Lt. Jon Thum, who was named the new chief after current Chief Matt Burns retires later this month, says he knows enforcement of the city ordinance is not easy.
“The key thing is there’s audible report or projectile that can be flying or discharge, so it’s just something we have to take stock in,” Thum said Thursday at the daily police briefing. “I know it becomes very difficult to enforce.
Nonetheless, Thum says police will be patrolling and responding to violations. Residents can call 367-7000, the police non-emergency line, to report problems.
But Thum hopes that people will just be polite in their use of fireworks.
“Be considerate of your neighbors,” Thum said. “Not everybody gets July 5th off, or a lot of people have to go to work. And a lot of times, I just think we see some kind of lack of courtesy to neighbors, and we’re shooting off fireworks at all hours of the night.”
If you’re caught, the fine is $95.
Sparklers and snakes are ok to use, according to Thum.
