YANKTON, S.D. (KELO.com) — A Parkston woman is the new South Dakota Veterans of Foreign Wars State Commander.
Barbara McKean assumed her post during the state VFW convention in Yankton over the weekend.
She served more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, eleven of those overseas. McKean’s mission as state commander is focusing on preventing suicide among veterans.
She’s also working to increase the number of female veterans involved with their local VFW posts.
Her husband Charlie also served more than 20 years active duty in the U.S. Air Force and is the state VFW Department Chief of Staff.
