SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — It’s rodeo season in South Dakota and State Veterinarian Dusty Oedekoven advises event managers can limit the spread of infectious diseases by requiring Certificates of Veterinary Inspection.
Bacterial diseases such as strangles, which typically give horses a fever and swelling under the jaw and along the neck, can spread quickly in venues. Oedekoven says horses with any clinical signs of illness should be isolated from other horses and should seek veterinary care. He also recommends against bringing affected horses to rodeos and jackpots. He adds good biosecurity practices at the events and by individual participants is important in limiting the spread of infectious diseases.
