MITCHELL, S.D. (KMIT) — A two-vehicle head-on crash shut down a portion of I-90 Thursday afternoon for just over an hour.
The crash happened at around 3:15 at mile marker 368, four miles north of Canistota, according to South Dakota Department of Public Safety spokesperson Tony Mangan. Traffic in that area is where traffic is reduced to two lanes due to construction.
A release from DPS said 62-year old Arder Wilkins of Kansas City was driving a Ford Explorer eastbound. He lost control, went into the westbound lane, and collided with a Dodge Ram pickup. The pickup partially blocked the westbound lanes, while the Explorer ended up in the median.
Wilkins suffered minor injuries and was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital, according to DPS. A 61-year old female passenger also suffered minor injuries.
The 39-year old male driver of the pickup, who was not identified, was also taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with minor injuries. A 48-year old male passenger in the pickup also suffered minor injuries.
Traffic was rerouted to Highway 38 until the interstate opened at around 4:30.
Charges are pending against Wilkins.
