SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sen. John Thune criticized Democratic partisanship in his response to President Joe Biden’s speech to Congress Wednesday night.
If the president continues to pursue a costly and one-sided agenda, he can expect fierce opposition from me and my Republican colleagues. My thoughts on @POTUS address 👇🏻 pic.twitter.com/4OG2cF3nfW

In a two-minute video, South Dakota’s senior senator said he and his Republican colleagues are willing to work with President Joe Biden on spending plans, but the president will have to make concessions.
“President Biden tonight echoed themes of bipartisanship and unity from his inaugural address,” Thune said. “But South Dakotans can clearly see the difference between talk and action.”
Biden proposed a sweeping new $1.8 trillion plan in his address, pleading with Republican lawmakers to work with him on divisive issues and to meet the stiff competition posed by China.
Biden is trying to thread the needle between Republicans opposed to more spending and the tax increases needed to pay for it, and liberal Democrats who want him to push for more aggressive plans. Thune said the margins in Congress are too thin for the president to avoid cooperation.
“The president must realize that he does not have a mandate for his partisan, big-spending policies,” Thune said.
