SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — As the famous KELO-TV weatherman Dave Deadrick (a.k.a. Captain 11) used to say on winter nights like tonight, “If you have a brass monkey#, you better bring him in. It’s going to be cold!”
Only a brass monkey is not impacted by windchill. But you get the idea.
Still, Thursday night and through Friday morning is going to be COLD!
The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory (below) for the immediate Sioux Falls area and much of the KELO Radio listening area. They say the area could experience a windchill of -34 degrees. The Weather Channel says the actual air temperature will reach the balmy high of -1 during the day after a predicted low tonight of an even lovelier -11 degrees.
Even that could be worse. If America used the Celsius scale, tonight’s low would be about -24.
Here’s the NWS Wind Chill Advisory:
…WIND CHILL ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 PM THIS EVENING TO NOON CST FRIDAY…
* WHAT…Very cold wind chills expected. Wind chills as low as 34 below zero.
* WHERE…Portions of east central South Dakota, northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. This includes the tribal lands of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal Nation.
* WHEN…From 11 PM this evening to noon CST Friday.
* IMPACTS…The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
#According to Wikipedia, a brass monkey is not only a monkey made out of brass but also a drink, a song by the Beastie Boys, and originally, a device to release cannon balls on sailing ships so they didn’t roll around on the deck.
