SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Those 65 and older and with two or more underlying health conditions could be eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines in South Dakota in the next few weeks.
Avera physician Dr. David Basel said initial vaccinations for the state’s top three tiers will be “at least mostly covered over the next couple of weeks,” allowing vaccines to start at the next group down.
Right now the state’s hospitals are vaccinating people in Group 1C, the third tier designated by the state. It includes emergency medical staff, lab technicians and law enforcement, among others. Frontline healthcare workers and those who live and work at nursing homes made up the top two tiers.
Group 1D, next in line for the vaccine, includes everyone 65 and older, people with two or more underlying conditions, teachers, those in congregate housing and funeral service workers. It’s a big group, and Basel is asking for the public’s patience in the rollout.
“I think the state estimated over 250,000 individuals in Group 1D,” Basel said. “We get 11,000 doses a week.”
Group 1E consists of essential industry workers, as well as firefighters. After that, the vaccine will become available to most adults.
